Review of Days of Heaven (1978) by Rahul R — 01 Jun 2009
This is one of those films that I've put off seeing for way too long. Terrence Malick created a film that is both honest and beautiful. Dialogue is minimal and the plot is simple, but all the more effective for it's lack of manipulation. If there's one filmmaker who knows how to use narration properly, it's Malick. Linda Manz is the narrator here and she's perfect for it, giving a natural delivery of material that, while it never feels forcefully expository, never comes off as extraneous either (fuck you Morgan Freeman.).
The photography is stunning and, rather than simply enhancing the story, serves as wholly part of it.
This is cinema.
