Review of Days of Heaven (1978) by Donovan M — 23 Jun 2009
At the end of the day, I'm not sure whether there's any substance to Malick's films -- though there are plenty of hints at it; his movies have a ruminative, meditative quality that encourages seeking something deeper behind the apparent plotless simplicity of his stories.
But this film's staggering, overpowering, jaw-dropping, and deeply poetic beauty overcomes any reservations I have had about his other films. There may not be anything behind the Malick curtain, but it's hard to care with this one.
Astonishing.
