Review of Days of Heaven (1978) by Tanya K — 30 Mar 2010
Infused with religious metaphor, right down to the burning of the gates of heaven, Malick once again proves to be a master at visual storytelling. Stunning cinematography gives a bit of perspective to the vastness of the land and its wildlife.
Malick uses dialogue sparingly; he lets the viewer witness only the most non-clichéd parts of conversations, just enough to lead them into the story which is about false pretences and taking advantage of others.
Voiceover is once again cleverly incorporated, and once again from the perspective of a young girl. What slowly becomes apparent is that the title refers to her point of view; despite the laborious work and long hours, for her it was a time of family, freedom and security - truly days of heaven.
