This film held my attention from the very beginning.

It has been the role of colonial powers to treat the populations of their colonies as second class citizens, whilst in the event of war, gladly allowing such populations to be used as cannon fodder.

Throughout the plot. the movie tackles racism both by the French themselves and those of mixed French-Arab origin; interracial relationships, and finally and most importantly, the filem shows exactly how France treated their colonial troops in the postwar years, especially when the colonies achieved independence.

This could have been filmed about a group of Gurkhas, Senegalese, or any non white colonial troops, and a similar offering showing how Afro-American trrops were treated in WW2 would be a subject worth broaching.

Lastly, the action scenes were excellent filmed, and a great effort was made to make all uniforms, and military equipment appear as authentic as possible.
