Powerful, yet restrained account of the experiences of North African soldiers fighting for France during WWII. Excellent performances, particularly from Sami Bouajila and Bernard Blancan and despite the emotive subject matter (the neglect and discrimination suffered by these brave men) Indigenes manages to avoid slipping into didactic cliche.

Characters are allowed complexity and humanity, making the overall experience that much more compelling and moving. Would make a good double with Glory, though Indigenes may be of primary interest to French audiences.

I believe that after the film's release, the French government finally reinstated these soldiers' war pensions, which, if that is the case, is proof both of the film's strength and of the injustice described within it.
