Review of Daybreakers (2010) by David P — 02 Jun 2012
What a suck-fest! I expect more from Ethan Hawke. The future portrayed here is far from fully realized; it is underwritten and unconvincing. And the story seems like it was written as an afterthought as thin justification for the Director of Photography an opportunity to present his already framed images.
Worse of all, the movie can't decide what kind of flick it wants to be. The end of the movie plays like a blood-and-guts horror worthy of a spread in Fangoria magazine. Which would be fine if the first three quarters of the movie didn't pretend to have the scope and weightiness of The Matrix.
This movie did accomplish something hard to attain, however: it made me leave the theater completely unentertained. Truly a feat rarely achieved.
