Review of Day Watch (2006) by Heather C — 10 Jun 2008
A couple of weeks after Aaron and I watched Night Watch, we watched the next movie in the series. This time, neither of us were looking forward to watching it, since our expectations were now very low.
According to IMDb, the movie is about: "A man (Khabensky) who serves in the war between the forces of Light and Dark comes into possession of a device that can restore life to Moscow, which was nearly destroyed by an apocalyptic event.".
As you can see from my rating, I like this movie a bit better than its predecessor in the series. The movie started off being just as confusing as the first one, with no real "catch you up" moments, so basically, you have to recall the first movie on your own...which for us, was difficult, since it was so confusing.
However, things started coming together for us this time around and the characters started fitting into a neater storyline. The characters weren't any better developed this time around, but by the final scene of the movie, you understood them all a whole lot better. The storyline, put together with the first movie, is actually pretty interesting. I wonder how much was lost on us because we don't speak or understand Russian, though. The graphics still weren't hyper-cool, like we'd originally hoped, but they sufficed.
Again, this was a violent flick. But virtually none of it seemed gratuitous. This go-round, there was actually a little bit of a mystery laced through the plot, which I always enjoy. As usual, I figured it out way earlier than the movie answered it for the viewer...and I probably blew it for Aaron by telling him too. Heh. Gratefully, this movie was a lot more enjoyable for us. I actually don't feel bad for kind of liking it even...
