Review of Day Watch (2006) by Jaiden M — 25 Jan 2013
Both NIGHT WATCH and DAY WATCH suffer from a general lack of coherence. While directors are often guilty of over-explaining and coddling the audience too much, Bekmambetov just plows full speed ahead with little exposition or causality. Weird events and subplots just transpire for no particular reason. It's possible that knowledge of Russian culture and folklore might fill in some of those gaps, but even so the films should be able to stand on their own.
DAY WATCH does wrap up with a pretty explosive finale that manages to tie up the main story arc very nicely. Taken as a whole the 2-film arc begins and finishes strongly - with a lot of nonsense in-between.
