Review of Day of the Woman (1978) by Paul J — 16 Dec 2010
The definitive rape and revenge story (that inspired Kill Bill) gets a rather brutal and savage telling. This is certainly not a pleasant film to watch. Nevertheless, its unflinching and surprisingly non-exploitative.
Or rather, considering mostly male audiences are going to watch this film, it's far from titillating and frankly the men are horribly pathetic. The movie is sick in a brilliant sort of way. The poor woman who endured this nasty mess, is in fact married to the writer/director.
It's actually kind of a feminist film. It's not manipulative either - there's no music. The bold and stark imagery is believable, disturbing and provocative. Siskel and Ebert destroyed this movie when it came out, and subsequently influenced United Artist to pull it from theatres, Yes it's an ugly film but you can't help but be caught up in this grisly and raw horror film.
