Review of Day of the Woman (1978) by Eric B — 23 Feb 2013
"I Spit on Your Grave"? What, another spaghetti western? This 1977 cult classic is a fine example of a great title that has nothing to do with its attached story. "Lake Rape" would be a more appropriate handle for this dingy, low-budget exploitation film that's more shocking today for its untamed pubic hair than its violence.
What's most attractive about "Grave" is the clean, undistracted symmetry of its structure -- a woman is sequentially raped by four men (three brutes, one imbecile), and then takes sequential revenge on her attackers.
Rape, rape, rape, rape. Kill, kill, kill, kill. The geometry is perfect. No other characters have time to make much impression, and they're not missed. But viewers who require craftsmanship or competent acting should paddle elsewhere.
