Review of Day Night Day Night (2006) by John G — 13 Oct 2007
Suspense via banality, silence against urbane, amplified everyday sounds and lack of passion unsurprisingly doesn't work very well. Scenes and pieces of this would work well in other, better films, but as it stands Day Night Day Night has five minutes before it gets annoying (through we-do-it-because-we-can-cuts and takes that purposefully and panifully don't show you anything) and fifteen minutes before it gets boring.
It's predicated on the questionable idea that someone's last twenty-four hours of life are inherently interesting and meaningful, and while that's a question people wrestle with all the time in art, there's no wrestling here - there's not much of anything really.
The time between the sixty and seventy minute marks is as strong as the film gets, and it takes too long to get there and too long to leave there. I know what they're trying to do and I'm saying they didn't do it well, except for the intro credits.
