Review of David Brent: Life on the Road (2016) by Adrian S — 27 Aug 2016
It's rare nowadays for me to find a film at the cinema constantly funny from start to finish - this was one that was. yes, you could say that it's just an extension of the office but isn't that a good thing? Lots of high end 'critics' (who have monever made a film themselves and are only any good at talking rating than doing - guess that what's they get paid for) have really missed the point of this film - the awkwardness, inppropriateness, cringe- worthiness actually nicely wrap up what is a heart warming tale of an underdog character just trying to make it and never giving up on a musical dream.
I often wonder how much of Ricky Gervais is in David Brent and vice versa. It is so very British and the songs are hilarious but also so very true - just communicated in a way that is a little blunt (equality Street, don't make fun of the disabled and ain't no trouble like trouble are my favorites).
the fact that the references to the original office series being no longer of interest and 'old news' shows Gervais' awareness of its place in media society yet top critics have still criticised it based on it being a bit dated.
That's what happens when you naively write just to suit your editor and an overly obvious viewpoint. We'll done Ricky Gervais - my wife and I loved it and had us both in stitches on our wedding anniversary!
