Review of David Brent: Life on the Road (2016) by Richard S — 19 Dec 2016
I'd been looking forward to seeing this and dreading it since it was first announced. I'm a big fan of The Office and it's special brand of painful comedy but something that made The Office extra special was the writing behind it. Gervais and Merchant wrote great comedy but also beautiful heartfelt moments between characters I had grown to love. The final episode of The Office ended in such a perfect way that I couldn't imagine wanting to go back into the character's lives to find out they had all changed or didn't live happily ever after. Plus great TV shows often fail the transfer to the big screen and so I was hoping this wasn't going to taint my memories of a great tv show. Luckily it didn't.
A wise choice was to focus solely on David Brent, it would have been an easy option to revisit all of the characters from the show but I think that wouldn't have worked. Here David finds himself working as a sales rep but with dreams of making it big as a rock star. There are a new set of characters, none of which are as memorable as the TV show but they all still provide the laughs and the painfully awkward moments we'd come to expect.
Not so much a sequel to The Office, more of a spin off and worth seeing if you're a fan of Ricky Gervais' most famous character.
