This is a military movie where you really get connected with the characters. Even though they're Germans, there's no talk about the master race or world domination or concentration camps -- just a bunch of young men trying to do a good job and stay alive.
It's tense and thrilling, sometimes a little cheesy but never gets dull despite a 3 1/2 hour running time.
