It may be a classic of German cinema but I personally feel I could have better spent the 5 hours needed to watch this. It's well-filmed and all, and it may be an accurate portrayal of life on a WW2 submarine but it's hard to justify sitting through it when so little happens.
Also, the ending didn't come off as tragic so much as a slap in the face.
