Review of Das Boot (1981) by Jim F — 10 Dec 2012
I dunno why, but i've always enjoyed submarine movies. Yeah, sure, they normally all end in the submarine running out of oxygen and everybody gasping for air untill they miraculously survive somehow or other.
I like the fact that everything is set in a confined space, and it's easy to familiarize myself with the characters quickly. This epic and rather long one gives you the full comprehensive submarine experience, cramped, wet and chaotic.
It even had it's own sense of subtle humour, not only with the banter, but small minor details such as when the sub has to submerge, all the food goes flying around, the apples rolling across the floor everytime.
It was also amusing to see the German submariners hanging their german meat on hooks in any place possible, and then it all goes moldy and they have to wait for a stop in Spain to get their new supplies.
Next scene we see nothing but bananas hanging in the places the meat was hung previously. For an old movie it was interesting to see it from the German perspective which included minor digs at their fuhrer, and also equal mickey taking of the alcoholic Winston Churchill.
