Review of Das Boot (1981) by Enno J — 21 May 2009
Masterpiece. So. Good. It's over 3 hours long and I just want to flip the DVD and watch it again right away. Drenched with atmosphere, amazing dynamics in the plot. Masterful camerawork (amazing), such interesting and charismatic ensemble cast.
And very interesting how the movie "dives" under the whole political conondrum which we should be in as viewers - after all, these are the bad guys and we are rooting for them. But the underwater warfare is so impersonal - only bombs, sonar, torpedos, never face to face - that we forget about sides.
It is only about survival in a mindless war.
