Review of Darkon (2006) by David E — 10 Jan 2009
I'd say this is about par for my expectations. I got this after seeing Role Models because I wanted a few more laughs at LARPers, which it delivers. It actually became slightly interesting to hear the various reasons for participating. The politics of the game and the imaginary hexes of land of the realm map weren't enough of an introductory view on what Darkon is, though.
It seems to me that these "nations" just role play a culture, individuals role play their characters' backstories, and they all get in foam wars because they're all really there to fight medieval style and camp with friends. Thus, the only point seems to be to expand your nation. Thus, it doesn't make any sense to hear people bitch and moan about one country being imperialistic just for being the largest, because they're all the same. I wanted to hear more technical details, even if only in passing. Such as, where does gold come from? How about the spells one guy sells to another, and how do they work? How do the weapon and armor types go together? Without any real information, it grew boring to hang out with these strange nerds. Still funny though.
