Review of Darkon (2006) by J D — 26 Feb 2008
Like "Trekkies" and "The King of Kong", an interesting look into a very unique subculture. Overall, this was a pretty strong documentary, and it treated its subjects with more respect than they probably get in general regarding their chosen pastimes.
For instance, the sweeping camera angles during the "fight" scenes are reminiscent of the stuff we saw in "Lord of the Rings", which I'm sure gave these guys a big thrill when they watched the documentary.
My one complaint is that the filmmakers never really explained the "rules" of Darkon. We don't know how it started, we don't know how one creates a kingdom, we don't really know much besides that everybody dresses up every other weekend and beats each other up with foam swords.
I would have liked to have seen a more in-depth look at how the game affected their "real" lives, as well as get a better idea of how the machinations of the characters worked within the idea of the game.
It's entertaining and interesting, it just felt like it could have gone farther with its subjects.
