Review of Darkman (1990) by Jon K — 01 Mar 2008
Essentally a ninety minute audition reel for the Spiderman franchise on the part of director Sam Raimi (it worked) this superhero/sci-fi/revenge movie combines a classy but inexepensive cast with some rather impoverished-looking effects work and a demented script which rarely makes sense but has plenty of zip and bluster.
Various even cheaper sequels followed with bottom-drawer acting talent and second hand scripts, but the original is a real oddity: a Grindhouse for the 1990s.
