Review of Darkman (1990) by Wade G — 23 Apr 2008
For those of you not familiar with Sam Raimi's directing (other than Spider-man), his movies are meant to be action-packed and fun rides. This movie pretty much suceeded if that's the kind of mindset you took with you to see this film.
Unfortunately, if you don't, it would seem as though the movie was trying to hard to be serious and ended up being campy. By taking on an origin story that is rather depressing and ripped from Phantom of the Opera, the audience may feel disapointed to find out that is merely your typical mob revenge flick that's all too familiar to Batman/Crow fans.
Personally, I was able to look past this and enjoy the film, (especially he humiliating ways the protagonist deals with the bad guys) but in the end, this will require a sense of tolerance from the audience that some may not be able to take in with their first viewing.
