Review of Darkman (1990) by Colin H — 31 May 2010
My main reason for seeing Darkman was because it's a Sam Raimi superhero film way, way before Spiderman and it stars Liam Neeson. That just sounds intriguing to me.
Liam Neeson plays a doctor investigating the process of regenerating skin tissue, when he is unexpectedly targeted by a mob boss controlled by a corporate figurehead. After one grisly "death", Neeson returns and becomes Darkman; using his research to disguise himself as other people and right the wrongs done to him.
Sounds pretty standard, and it is quite straightforward, but I enjoyed its gritty take on the superhero genre, and Raimi's token dark humour and gore effects from Evil Dead are present too. The only thing that bothered me was Danny Elfman's score... this was obviously after Batman... and does it show! I half expected the batmobile to come shrieking into shot!
