Review of Darkest Hour (2017) by Bailey K — 23 Jan 2018
The movie had a good pace and focused heavily on the politics of Churchill's first month as Prime Minister. Gary Oldman's character can be difficult to understand for people unfamiliar with Churchill and his story prior to becoming Prime Minister.
The movie makes a few references to his time as an officer in order to patch up his past, but you really must know a brief history of Churchill before you see the movie, which is why I took a star off.
The cinematography was excellent, the pace was right where it needed to be, and the script was witty and fast-paced. Almost everyone's acting was superb. The make-up and hair were astonishing, Ronald Pickup looked too similar to old Neville Chamberlain.
Gary Oldman was transformed. Lilly Collins did fine, the dynamic between her and Oldman was well done, not to mention historically accurate by many accounts. I would give this movie an 85%.
