Review of Darkest Hour (2017) by Ben B — 10 Dec 2018
Darkest Hour is probably one of the best films of recent years and is definitely one of the most entertaining and powerful interpretations of Churchill's rise to power. Gary Olden, who I loved in the Dark Knight, gave us one of the best performances of recent years and his character development and arc was extremely interesting.
Every characters isn't one dimensional and none of the character development is nonexistent. Lilly James is definitely worth noting as her extraordinary performance hits all the right marks giving us more of a sympathetic and emotional character then I originally thought.
It's a shame that she didn't get an Oscar nomination. The makeup and hairstyling is outstanding, as well as the cinematography, visual effects, production design, set design and dialogue. They're all top-notch.
The pacing is slow and does feel like it goes on for longer then two hours which was oddly great as it felt like we got more detail and depth to this story. The underground scene is terrific and showcases the citizens emotions as well as Winston Churchill's.
I would definitely recommend this film, it is brilliant. Everything is perfect. Even though I enjoy Spider-Man Homecoming more than this and would rather watch The Greatest Showman over this, this is the better film.
