Review of Dark Star (1974) by Matthew B — 05 Jun 2007
You may need a toke or two before this one to take it all in, but I promise you, you won't need it the next time around. Carpenter's approach to film is surprisingly original, intense, and funny on many levels.
Trust me, this seemingly goofy story has within it some of the deeper themes of the sci-fi genre. Like many sci-fi space travesties Dark Star is a thinly veiled allegory to the Vietnam War. But unlike the others, Dark Star is not a bleeding-heart anti-war statement, rather an critique of society at large and a comical look at where war fits in a world that is becoming incrasingly aimless and incapable of communicating information.
A must see for sci-fi fans, war movie fans, and fill lovers of all shapes and sizes.
