Visually, it holds up to the standards of Burton/Depp collaborations. But the plot meanders, and the humor comes and goes inconsistently, never truly allowing the movie to settle into a rhythm. It does feature one of the more humorous sex scenes I've ever seen, and the montage set to the Carpenters is very funny for the juxtaposition, if nothing else.
Depp and Burton seem to misfire more often than not, and unfortunately now Depp's British accent sounds too much like Jack Sparrow to differentiate between that character and Barnabus Collins. Burton tries too hard to have it both ways; the soap opera that is its legacy, and the humor that he tried to interject.
Even the chemistry between Depp and Bonham Carter seems forced, when it is usually so natural.
