Too much of a messy concoction of genres, characters, and twists. There were two problems that plague the film from the start: it is too colourful and effects laden, and it relies too much on comedy to pass the time.

The film would have been better served if Burton created a more earthly Gothic atmosphere. Instead, your eyes are bombarded with effects that take you right out of the movie. The ending is an example of this.

I haven't been so needlessly exhausted from a movie like this since "The Sorcerers Apprentice." The film also tries to be two genres at once. Instead of using the comedy as a pleasant undertone to the plot, Burton brings it front and centre.

And he succeeds in making you laugh, but he doesn't blend it well with the darker more prominent vampire/love story at all. The characters are a mess as well. Eva Green is unfortunately miscast as the witch, Angelique, and the kids are completely misused.
