Dark Places is missing the energy and excitement that made the book such a page-turner. Along with the bland direction, there are a number of questionable casting decisions, like the voluptuous, big-eyed Christina Hendricks who plays "plain Jane" Patty Day, and the gorgeous Charlize Theron, despite her determination, ultimately fails at capturing Libby.
There is mystery on the surface but nothing propels the film forward.
