Review of Dark Places (2015) by Ian G — 18 Feb 2016
This is the second out of the gate film from the mind of Gillian Flynn following in the footsteps of the Fincher success of Gone Girl and unfortunately despite the top tier cast, it has a lot of trouble getting out of the gate, mainly due to slightly mismanaged nature of the twists in the story of the cover involving the attempted disappearence of two small town kids as well as their mothers attempt to start a new life away from her indebt farm and abusive, drug adelled husband.
Dark Places jumps back and forth in time, using the eldest daughter and survivor Charlize Theron living off of the told story of that night 25 years ago and how a group of dark investigated locate her to attempt to solve the case which opens a whole can of worms.
The performances were decent for what they were given but if the project were in firmer hands, the multiple story arcs may have come together a lot more cohesively, but alas things ended up ion a jumble half way through and Dark Places wasn't able to escape the tall shadow of David Fincher.
