Review of Dark Places (2015) by Godfrey M — 27 Feb 2016
Review:
I really enjoyed the whole investigating side of this movie and the fact that it isn't predictable, made it quite enjoyable. Charlize Theron was a great choice for the older Libby, who is trying to find out who murdered her mother and sister when she was 7 years old. Her brother was convicted of the murders because all of the evidence pointed to him, on that tragic night and the fact that he was worshipping Satan and he was a suspect for molesting young girls, made him the perfect culprit for the murders. Twenty Five years later, Libby is running low on cash, so she accepts a deal from a fan who is a member of the kill club, which is an group of investigators who try and solve crimes and help the wrongly convicted. When Libby eventually joins forces with Lyle (Nicholas Hoult), they follow all of the evidence, which unravels a story which is truly worth watching. The main problem with this low budget film is that, once you know what really happened to Libby and her family, it's not the type of film that you will watch again. Don't get me wrong, it's very well written and the various characters made the film a good watch but the whole intriguing aspect, goes out of the window the second time round. With that aside, I still got into this dark drama and the way that it changed its direction, the deeper that Libby and Lyle was getting into the night of the crime, made it a decent watch. Watchable!
Round-Up:
After her great performance in Mad Max, which also starred Nicholas Hoult, it's good to see Charlize Theron, 40, proving that she take on low budget movies and still put in a great performance. She is rumoured to be starring in the next Fast in Furious movie, Fast 8 and with the Huntsman Winter's War and with 10 other projects in the pipeline, which includes a Mindhunter TV series, she really has a lot to look forward to. This movie was directed and written by Giles Paquet-Brenner, who adapted the original book, written by Gillian Flynn, for the big screen. He also directed Sarah's Key, which got some great reviews from critics but I've got a funny feeling that this movie will slip under the radar, even though it stars Charlize Theron. I personally think that he done a great job with this movie and he got the most out of the experienced cast, so it definitely gets the thumbs up from me.
Budget: N/A.
Worldwide Gross: $3.5million.
I recommend this movie to people who are into their drama/mystery/thrillers starring Charlize Theron, Nicholas Hoult, Corey Stoll, Christina Hendricks, Chloe Grace Moretz, Drea De Matteo and Anrea Roth. 6/10.
