Review of Dark Phoenix (2019) by Seanmcmahon — 06 Jun 2019
I'm not sure how I feel about this film. I prefer it over Wolverine Origins, I think, but there is hardly any character development and the villain is very 2 dimensional. I'm a huge fan of the X-Men and have been for ages, but it's so sad to see the series end on such a disappointing note. I've been defending this series for ages as nearly all the films are great, but I find it hard to look for any big positives in the film. There were some terrible one-liners in the film but apart from them, the acting was mostly good, but apart from that and maybe the first act, the film was very flat. There weren't any bits where I thought "Omg this is the worst f#cking thing" but there weren't any moments where I was like "This is amazing". There was just so much, and yet so little going on at the same time.
I could go on for hours about my back and forth opinion on the film, but if I could try and sum it up in a few words it, they would be anticlimactic, rushed and lacking backstory and motive. Still, definitely not the worst I've seen.
