Review of Dark Passage (1947) by Nikolai E — 10 Feb 2008
Yeah, the fact that the first 30 minutes are shot entirely first-person and we don't see the protagonist's face until halfway through the second act could come off as gimmicky, but that fact alone seems to distract people from everything else this film has to offer.
Finally, here is a movie where the characters are smarter than the audience. They catch on to things, notice details, have conversatons that play out move by countermove like a chess game. It's the kind of script that was rare even in its day.
Even its gimmicks are well-produced and justified, not just there for its own sake. I'd rank this terribly undervalued gem as one of Bogart's best.
