Review of Dark Horse (2012) by Carole T — 17 Apr 2013
I knew that a Todd Solondz movie would likely make me uncomfortable, given that the "Welcome to the Dollhouse" and "Happiness" director (to name his two biggest pictures) has made a career of showcasing awkwardness and self-loathing.
But here I felt uncomfortable because he seemed to be retreading this theme a little less satirically, a little more obviously, not at all funnily and not really darkly. Instead, Jordan Gelber plays a less funny, younger, version of Jason Alexander's George Costanza, getting into similar predicaments for similarly neurotic reasons but turning angry and bitter rather than ridiculous.
The NY Times seems to have loved it and called it Bunuellian (there are dream/fantasy sequences), but I couldn't get with the program.
