Review of Dark Days (2000) by Jess L — 13 Oct 2007
A beautifully filmed and intense documentary on a group of homeless New Yorkers living under the city's subway. Singer has taken a simplistic approach to the visual style of this doco; devoting two years of his life to making this fim, his dedication shows whilst watching this. The people are open, honest and not afraid to share their stories with the camera, something that was no doubt brought about by the director's time spent with his documentary subjects.
The stories themselves are heart breaking, and a true testimony of how a person's life can change paths so easily and dramatically. Their surroundings though homely are shocking and a stark reminder of how fortunate we are to have a roof over our heads and a comfortable life.
An eye opening film and one that shows both the dark and lighter side of these people's lives. The uplifting ending was enjoyable to see. Highly recommended.
