Review of Dark Country (2009) by A. N — 27 Sep 2009
...wait, what? The whole time I was watching this, I was entertained. But never extremely entertained, generally just moderately so. It's an extremely simple premise: a newly married couple is driving through the desert at night.
They almost hit a guy who just got out of a car accident. They decide to help him. Things get weirder. That's it! I kept thinking this was going to be more of a character study, and I kept waiting to actually learn something new about these two people to see why I should be watching the movie.
... but it never came. It never came! All of a sudden there's cops everywhere and chase scenes and flashbacks... and none of it adds up to anything! The twist at the end is the real deal breaker. Nothing.
.. NOTHING... in the movie prepares you for this. There's not even a line to HINT that something like this might be POSSIBLE. I guess I'm giving it a rating above "terrible" because it's very well directed, and it's definitely provocative and intriguing.
It's nothing very original (until the end), but the direction and acting makes it seem that way. Just... be prepared, I guess.
