Review of Dark Blue (2002) by Ryan J — 24 Jul 2010
Dark Blue is a powerful tale of corruption and greed from within the different ranks of the Los Angeles police department. The film takes place in the days leading up to the Rodney King beating. Director Ron Shelton did a great job in capturing the tensions from within the LAPD and around the city. A great cop drama that is gripping in its storytelling from start to finish.
In the film we follow Eldon Perry, played by Kurt Russell and his rookie partner, played by Scott Speedman as they try to solve a suspicious homicide. The more they dig deeper into the case, the more it doesn't add up. Both men battle personal demons as they travel farther and farther down a dangerous road, a road filled with corrupt cops, fabricated stories, and organized crime.
Kurt Russell gives a great performance, Scott Speedman is good as well, but Brendan Gleeson gives the powerhouse performance. If you are a fan of cop dramas, you find this to have some of the elements of Training Day and LA Confidential, two of the best cop films ever made.
