Review of Dark Blue (2002) by Joshua L — 18 Dec 2011
I am not just saying this as a Kurt Russell fan but he makes this movie more watchable then the whole. This movie doesn't even the back drop of the race riots because of Rodney King beatings. Sure it adds to some of the tension but a deeper character study of a dirty cop w/ his own corruption, demons & alcoholism would have been a much better movie.
That's what makes a movie like The Bad Lieutenant so outstanding. Dark Blue has that potential w/ many elements & the pieces are there but it decides to spread its seeds around so the roots aren't as deep as the should be.
Even @ a rather lengthy run time it doesn't get under the skin as much as it should have. Maybe another 30-20 minutes would have done it or maybe Im wrong w/ that & it would have been a bit long in the tooth.
All & all this could have been something that stood out in its era like Colors did in the 80s. Good (mostly for Russell) but misses the mark a bit..especially since Michael Michele wasn't naked.
