Review of Dark August (1976) by Jacob F — 16 Aug 2010
This is the definition of a gem, though I can easily see how it got lost. This isn't a horror film. It's a supernatural drama that's a surprising story of faith: an honest, believing rendering of 1970's Magick and New Age occultism, and one character's spiritual awakening.
The characters are terrifically rendered for a movie of this type, the script is terrific, it errs on the side of subtlety and ambiguity and the quasi-experimental musical score is brilliant.
