Review of Daredevil (2003) by Johnathon W — 20 Mar 2015
Better than remembered comic adaptation that tries hard to honor the source material but suffers from some miscasting & poor decisions behind the camera. Affleck is solid but not extraordinary in the lead role, convincing as both Matt Murdoch & Daredevil but never stands out in a significant way.
The rest of the cast is hit & miss, with the late Michael Clarke Duncan excellent as the Kingpin, though Jennifer Garner is miscast as Elektra (considering her work on "Alias", should would have made a solid Black Widow, though Scarlet Johanson now owns that role).
It doesn't help you depicted as a rich heiress over an assassin she really is. The scene-stealer Colin Farrell, clearly having fun as Bullseye along with the audience. Behind the camera, Mark Steven Johnson shows love the comic, with numerous cameos & references to past creators.
However, his action scenes are badly choreographed & hard to follow and the tone bounces between gritty street drama & cartoonish, wire-fu action, never really fitting together. Overall, not a terribly bad film but just not a very good one.
