Review of Dangerous Liaisons (1988) by Matthew B — 25 Sep 2013
A swamp of rococo intrigue. Glenn Close and John Malkovich are fascinating as the merciless, elegantly sinister Marquise Isabelle de Merteuil and the irreverently seductive Vicomte Sebastien de Valmont.
Keanu Reeves, laughably repellant (as one might expect) as the gourd-headed Chevalier Danceny, is the only weak link in the cast; Swoosie Kurtz, Michelle Pfeiffer (tantalizing as Madame de Tourvel), and Uma Thurman (a veritable peach as Cecile de Volanges) provide strong supporting performances.
George Fenton's darkly theatrical baroque score meshes perfectly with Stephen Frears' grandiose filmmaking.
