Review of Dangerous Beauty (1998) by Sloopy C — 03 Sep 2009
A lush and interesting tale of a courtesan in Venice. A great story about a woman and the man she loves and all that fun melodrama that entails. They do a good job of bringing up class and all the stupid shenanigans that entails as well as addressing the central theme: what is sexual power? What makes a woman wanted? Is that power real power?
Rufus Sewal does a great job playing against type (for once he gets to play a romantic lead instead of a dark shady dude) and Oliver Platt is great as creepifying and gross. Catherine McCormack never ceases to amaze me though, especially in her main role here. She comes off so beautiful but in a very real and fun way and carries the role with grace and poise. A very interesting feminist message.
