Review of Dancer in the Dark (2000) by Matthew S — 21 Jan 2009
- on dvd -.
To start off this film has an overture, it is the longest most boring pointless thing to put in a movie, maybe I'm just not cultured enough but it did my fucking head in. Plus 40 minutes in the movie suddenly becomes a musical, I have never before seen a musical I've really enjoyed. So far it sounds like I hate this film. But on the contrary this film is incredible. The musical aspect is actually one of the best bits of the movie as it is unlike any other musical it has a strange uneasy feel to it despite it being rather upbeat. Great performances from Bjork, David Morse and Peter Stormare. I only recently discovered Stormare after watching him in the television series Prison Break and the movie Armageddon and I am becoming an increasingly bigger fan of his acting. An incredibly different movie and also a very sad movie. Better than Von Trier's previous movie The Idiots which is also a good movie. I highly recommend this movie.
