Review of Dancer in the Dark (2000) by Grayson D — 08 Jan 2011
A positively lurid, almost unwatchable experiment from provocateur Lars Von Trier, one that tests the limit of the audience. You are asked to sit through a satire on musical cinema that is never funny, complete with dance sequences of bad songs and Bjork's caterwauling.
If you like Bjork's music, though, you probably won't like her acting. Her portrayal of Selma is so repelling that most of the moments where you are asked to root for her fall flat because of such a lack of sympathy.
Stretch this out for two and a half tepid hours and then see if you can forgive Von Trier's blind ambition and shoddy camerawork. Chances are, you won't.
