Review of Dancer in the Dark (2000) by Alberto A — 05 Jun 2012
And Von Trier astonishes me again... Dancer in the Dark (decidedly a Palme D'Or winner) makes me wanna kill the world. It shows a society with high discrimination towards people with special needs, or "handicapped" people, a term which is prejudicial and I'm sorry for using it. It shows the relativism of the perception of reality. Selma's perception was vaccinated by the happy endings in Hollywood musicals, she uses art, in this case music, to isolate from the human atrocities. At the same time protecting her son from losing one of the most important senses. This woman is admirable, in the whole picture she never loses her faith in her own principles and goals.
Björk delivers one of the best performances I've ever seen in my entire life, along with Charlize Theron in Monster and Elizabeth Taylor in Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf. She put me in Selma's shoes with her performance, she made me shiver throughout almost the whole film, and she left me entirely stunned! A MUST-SEE.
