Review of Dancer in the Dark (2000) by Jacob P — 02 Dec 2013
I wasn't prepared for this. I've heard this was one of the saddest films ever made but I thought it was an exaggeration. I've held my own during countless films however this movie just broke me down.
It's emotionally devastating and I'm exhausted. It's a manipulative play on the cliches in movies but it works. No wonder Bjork won the Oscar for this film. I can hardly breathe, I was finally able to take a breath at the end of the credits.
This movie is amazing and emotional and just human. It captures pure emotion on screen and I can say that it's one of the best films that truly represents so many feelings. I felt everything during this movie, I felt happiness when her son got the bike.
I felt sadness when I saw some of the grimmest images I've witnessed before me. In a technical standpoint it was raw. It was very similar to Godard's Breathless with jump cuts in between conversations.
It didn't bother me at all. I could nick pit all of the things wrong with this movie but I won't. It was meant to whisk you away into emotion. It's perfect storytelling foremost and I can say that it's one of the best movies I will never see again.
