Review of Damsels in Distress (2012) by Alan W — 22 Oct 2011
I don't hate this film. But as the surprise film of this year's London Film Festival, it is a disappointment. While not a fan of Stillman's work, I do not mind his trademarked articulate script and very 'talky' style.
And I did laugh a few times. And I love Thor (the character in this film, not the Marvel Comic). But for all the quirky subplots and side stories, the sum of these parts sadly does not add up for me. The film is neither satirical nor does it feel a reflection of reality.
So I walk out of the cinema in the end bemused and certainly unsure of what I have seen in the last hour and half. The feeling of pointlessness and emptiness permeates my mind. And to end the film with a song-and-dance number - feels like a cheat - just to make me feel good before I exit.
Did I miss something? If so, I think I am not alone.
