Review of Dagon (2001) by Bj W — 05 Jun 2008
I'm a pretty big fan of this movie. I think that it is expertly crafted by Stuart Gordon and at times is absolutely dripping with tension and atmosphere.
Considering the budget of this movie I think that the effects are very well done and, well, effective. In particular there are some nasty gore sequences that simultaneously make me smile and cringe.
The acting is pretty good for the most part. Though there are some weak moments due to the fact that some of the cast are not natively English speaking.
To be honest my biggest complaint about this movie is Ezra Godden. Don't get me wrong, I don't think he was bad in it-quite the opposite in fact-but after the previous Stuart Gordon Lovecraft adaptations he just seems like Jeffrey Combs-lite to me. And that's not his fault, that's entirely on me, but regardless it does take me out of the movie when I'm sitting there thinking "man I wish this was Jeffrey Combs".
