Review of Dagon (2001) by Patrick D — 09 Jun 2009
An effective and somewhat faithful retelling of Lovecraft's The Shadow Over Innsmouth, Dagon is great horror. Lovecraft was the master of horrors unknown, something that has always disturbed me quite a bit, so seeing a faithful rendition (as faithful as you're gonna see, unless Guillermo del Toro gets his wheels rolling) of one of his classic stories is always refreshing.
The film takes a bit of time to get rolling, but once the chanting starts, and the offshore couple are forced to investigate, tons of creepiness ensues. And the make-up and effects are very well-done for this low a budget.
You got to hand it to Stuart Gordon, the guy can take a pile of poop and script worthy of toilet paper, and actually make it watchable.
