Review of Cyrus (2010) by Kayvon P — 15 May 2011
Badly marketted as a broad comedy on release, the funniest scenes are probably all in the trailer. And they indeed funny. However what they forgot to mention, was the sweet, sensitive, emotionally and psychologically truthful middle-age relationship story, and study in emotional immaturity, behind everything.
Many years divorced John, a sweet but clingy man strikes up an almost too good to be true relationship with a cute, kooky single mum. The only complication is her 21 year old son Cyrus and their uncomfortably comfortable relationship.
The trio of actors are really the films best asset - the Duplasses edgy in the moment style does bring a lot of intimacy, but it simply serves to heighten the great performances and script. I enjoyed the tension that the Duplasses might swerve into really dark territory, yet thankfully they give their characters a warm and optimistic ending which you feel they've earnt.
