Review of Cyrus (2010) by Jorg Z — 24 Jun 2011
I was really prepared to dislike this movie, but ended up buying it as soon as it was available on DVD. A very "real" and nuanced film. None of the characters are two dimensional, all of them are flawed and we can identify with many of their frailties and awkward moments.
My guess is that this film will get panned for all the wrong reasons -- people who go, expecting to see John C Reilly and Jonah Hill turn in yet another teenage, man-boy bit of foolishness. Instead, what they get is a great dramatic film, with an honest-until-it-hurts script about people. Just people. Not caricatures, no frat house pratfalls, no men acting badly. Just people. Wonderful, intimate film.
